Gloucester County petitioners on the hook for $80,000 worth of fines took their civic battle to Richmond this week and scored key victories in the House of Delegates.

They also picked up the support of what could become a key ally, the American Civil Liberties Union.

Salmon and gold mining. Both are, inarguably, very Alaskan.

But on Tuesday, Alaskans will vote on a ballot measure that is being framed as a choice between the two industries and portrayed by both sides as striking at the heart of what it means to be Alaskan.

The Alaska Supreme Court has dismissed one of two “clean water” ballot initiatives aimed at blocking development of the Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska.

Justices on Monday agreed to dismiss a pending case disputing Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell’s finding last year that the “Clean Water 1” initiative was unconstitutional.

The initiative was one of two filed by Pebble opponents to limit water pollution discharges from large mines.
