I-1029 Opponents to Sue Over Petition Snafu

Opponents of the Service Employees International Union’s long-term care initiative plan to file a lawsuit to keep the measure off the ballot. That’s according to a story by The Olympian’s Brad Shannon, which you can find here. Backers for the measure, which would boost training and set certification standards for long-term care workers, turned in signatures for the initiative to the people on petitions designed for initiatives to the Legislature.

Washington: Anti-Congestion Referendum Gathers Momentum

Initiative 985 would remove profit from red light cameras, synchronize traffic lights and create a fund devoted to reducing congestion. Later today, activists representing the group Voters Want More Choices are planning planning to hand the Secretary of State's office more than 226,000 signatures -- exceeding the minimum required to certify the measure for the upcoming election. "We've cleared a huge initial hurdle, but we've got another final hurdle to go," lead activist Tim Eyman said in an email to supporters. "We need to turn-in a bunch of extra voter signatures -- a cushion -- to ensure we qualify I-985 for the ballot."

Constitutional questions about 601 go unanswered

The state Supreme Court agreed unanimously this morning to uphold increases in tobacco and alcohol taxes approved by the 2005 Legislature. But no substantive constitutional issues were settled. For the second time the court sidestepped the issue of whether the 1993 voter-approved Initiative 601 was constitutional. In 1994 the court declined to rule on a challenge to implementation of the law, saying the plaintiffs could not yet show any harm from the measure.

Voters favor insurance bill, rainy-day fund; Eyman's anti-tax measure passing

Despite a record-setting deluge of spending by the insurance industry, voters on Tuesday handily approved a measure that allows policyholders to sue for triple damages if an insurance company "unreasonably" denies a legitimate claim.
