Knox Charter Petition Group Begins Collecting Signatures

A group of Knox County citizens is pushing for change within the county government by collecting signatures from registered voters. Thursday, the group hit the streets shortly after it won approval from the election commission to begin the petition. Sundown in the City offered the usual fun, food, and music, in addition to the chance to begin changing Knox County's Government. The Charter Petition Group was on hand collecting signatures of registered voters in an effort to get their issues on the November ballot. Their issues are numerous, including one which isn't getting much opposition, and that would change the county charter to ban an elected official from helping a family member get a job within the county. Eric Henry signed the petition, and says, "It just seems there's a good ole boy in government and I think sooner we can stop that and get back to accountability in government."

Washington: Anti-Congestion Referendum Gathers Momentum

Jack Fagan, Tim Eyman, Mike FaganIt appears increasingly likely that Washington state voters will have a chance to approve an anti-congestion initiative on the November ballot. Initiative 985 would remove profit from red light cameras, synchronize traffic lights and create a fund devoted to reducing congestion. Later today, activists representing the group Voters Want More Choices are planning planning to hand the Secretary of State's office more than 226,000 signatures -- exceeding the minimum required to certify the measure for the upcoming election. "We've cleared a huge initial hurdle, but we've got another final hurdle to go," lead activist Tim Eyman said in an email to supporters. "We need to turn-in a bunch of extra voter signatures -- a cushion -- to ensure we qualify I-985 for the ballot."

Ballot Measure Would Give South Dakotans More Government Information

An initiative to limit campaign contributions by people with government contracts and to create a public Web site for details of those contracts will be on the ballot in November. Advertisement Secretary of State Chris Nelson certified what's titled the Open and Clean Government Act for a spot on the ballot after he and his staff did a random check of 5 percent of the 26,000 or so signatures filed on petitions.

Dan Walters: Mixed bag of news for Núñez

Last week was somewhat of a mixed bag for Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez. The highlight, from his standpoint, was being selected as one of Governing magazine's nine "public officials of the year." The magazine cited his ability to put together a striking record of legislation in 2006, acting as a bridge between a liberal Legislature and Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
