Ballot measure to retire dog racing in state is tight
Category: Gaming · State: Massachusetts · Source: Boston Globe
A grainy video posted on YouTube shows an octet of lean greyhounds speeding around the track at the Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park. Suddenly, one dog skids and collides with another before tumbling end over end and hitting a wall.
A hideous finale, but not the end of the line for the fallen greyhound. In a second video, now being promoted as a counterargument by track owners, the dog is back in action, competing again at Wonderland Park in Revere.
The disparate images highlight the dramatically different perceptions of the ballot question that could end dog racing by 2010. On one side, the dog defenders who came close to banning racing in 2000 are decrying kennel conditions and highlighting injuries that greyhounds suffer during races. On the other, track owners say that those injuries are few while the cost in human capital would be substantial if the question passes. A new television ad, sponsored by the opposition group and set to begin airing today, features hundreds of Raynham employees gathered in the track that provides their livelihood.
Lakewood minicasino ban appears headed to ballot
Category: Gaming · State: Washington · Source: Tacoma News-Tribune
The group trying to rid Lakewood of minicasinos appears to have collected enough signatures to put its initiative on the ballot. City voters would make the final decision as part of the busy general election in November. City Manager Andrew Neiditz told the Lakewood City Council Monday night that he spoke with Pierce County Auditor Pat McCarthy’s office earlier in the day. The county said that after an initial count of all signatures gathered in the city’s first-ever citizen initiative campaign, 3,904 are valid. The Save Lakewood group needs at least 3,707 valid signatures to force city leaders to ban minicasinos or put it to a public vote. The county will check all 6,138 signatures again for their validity, but the Auditor’s Office doesn’t expect the number that are valid to go down, Neiditz said.
Opinion: Dan Walters: Odd allies, confusion bend vote

As voters begin to focus on the Feb. 5 presidential primary - and especially on the array of non-presidential ballot measures - they'll need a scorecard to follow the players. While all campaigns on ballot measures tend to be misleading, those lining up for and against the Feb. 5 measures are an especially odd collection of bedfellows.
